Making those tough survival choices

During an emergency situation it can be difficult to look after yourself, let alone others.  Should you face a devastating emergency it may be necessary to leave home in a hurry.  This is usually when people encounter their first difficult choice, take the pets or leave them behind.  It may be easy for some to just say “yea, leave them behind” but pets have a habit of becoming as valued as other family members.  The only time you would ever consider leaving them behind is in a catastrophic emergency. You will need to evaluate the pros and cons of leaving the pet behind or taking them with you.  If you do need to make that difficult decision, do your pet a big favor and leave them outside before driving off.  This way they will at least have some possible chance of survival.  If you leave them in the house they may only last a few days before dying of dehydration. Another terrifying situation is when a loved one or close friend is injured during the escape attempt and is incapacitated in a difficult area, such as the bottom of a cliff or deep in a forest.  Such areas could prove impossible to evacuate them from and you may need to leave them behind.  Depending on the emergency situation you may be leaving them temporarily to try and find some help or you may be leaving them and not coming back.  If you are leaving them behind while you look for help, leave plenty of water and medical supplies for them, but if you are leaving them permanently, as hard as it might be, you will need to take everything.  You may even need to remove their boots or other equipment if you think it will aid in your own survival.  It will be very difficult to do this but you need to consider your own survival first. The custom of the sea

This is by far the worst decision that could be made during a survival situation.  The custom of the sea refers to a very old system where shipwrecked sailors would draw lots to see who would be killed and eaten in order for the others to survive.  There are plenty of emergencies where this could become necessary for your survival.  The most recent scenario where cannibalism was used during a survival situation was the 1972 crash of Uruguayan flight 571.  This aircraft crash-landed in the Andes Mountains and the survivors were ultimately forced to eat the dead in order to survive.
